The Clements Cuties tradition began in the 1970s, when a group of local male softball players dressed as women and took to the field to raise money for charitable causes. Known for their humor, generosity, and willingness to put on a memorable show, the original Cuties created a community tradition centered on helping neighbors in need.
In 2014, Gary Norris and Ricky Ryce brought the Clements Cuties back to life with a new generation of participants made up of descendants and friends of the original group. Since then, the annual Clements Cuties Softball Showdown has grown into a much-anticipated community event that combines laughter, friendly competition, and fundraising for local families battling childhood cancers and other illnesses.
The Foundation’s success would not be possible without the leadership and dedication of Ricky Ryce, Michelle Bowles, and the many volunteers, families, friends, businesses, and community organizations that help plan, fund, and carry out each event. From the players who take the field to the donors, sponsors, entertainers, and volunteers working behind the scenes, every person involved plays an important role in supporting our recipients.
Since 2014, the Softball Showdown was held at Cryer’s Back Road Inn in Compton, Maryland. The historic ball field and the generosity of the bar owner, Jim Cryer, were an important part of the event’s identity and growth. Jim was a tremendous supporter of the Clements Cuties and the community, and his contributions will always remain part of the Foundation’s story.
Following the loss of Jim and the removal of the ball field, the Softball Showdown begins a new chapter in 2026 at the Moose Lodge #495 in Mechanicsville, Maryland. While the location has changed, the heart of the event remains the same: bringing the community together for an unforgettable day while raising much-needed funds for people facing difficult circumstances.
Each year, the Softball Showdown features entertaining softball, plenty of outrageous antics, silent and live auctions, raffles, refreshments, music, and activities for the community. Most importantly, it provides an opportunity for friends, families, local organizations, and supporters to come together in the spirit of generosity.
